Panama's Destinations

Panama City offers a wide range of unique activities. We have recommended the following ‘must-sees’ before you leave.

Visit the Miraflores Lock and Visitor Center: Located only 20 minutes’ drive from Grace Panama, this is one of the most interesting and convenient places to gain insight into the construction and workings of the mighty Panama Canal. The Miraflores lock gates, just over one mile long, are the tallest of the three locks on the canal, lowering ships 16 metres to sea level at the Pacific terminus in the bay of Panama. Watch gigantic vessels and cruise ships passing through this feat of engineering and enjoy several interactive exhibitions through a navigation simulator or a virtual ocean-to-ocean transit. Open daily 9.00am – 5.00pm

Explore Casco Viejo: Featured in the James Bond Quantum of Solace movie, the historical Casco Antiguo (also known as Casco Viejo, Spanish for ‘Old Quarter’) was founded in 1673. Casco Viejo is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was the second city of Panama. It is a charming district comprising a mix of Spanish and French Colonial architecture dating from the 15th to the 19th centuries. It features many museums and historic monuments, including the Interoceanic Museum, San Jose Church, the Golden Altar and the National Theatre.

Climb the Ancon Hill: There is no better way to see Panama City’s past, present and future than by hiking up the city’s highest peak, Ancon Hill in the Metropolitan Natural Park. Here lies the only rainforest in the world within the city boundaries of a metropolis, from where you can enjoy a stunning bird’s eye view of Casco Viejo, the modern Panama City and the Canal. Mornings are the best to embark on this two-hour hike.

Amador Causeway: One should not miss this beautiful 6 kilometre long causeway consisting of four islands alongside the Pacific entrance to the canal. The causeway was originally constructed as a breakwater for the Panama Canal entrance. Watch as ships enter the passage to the Panama Canal, take a stroll along the sidewalk, shop in the Duty Free store on Flamenco Island, take a boat to visit other local islands, visit the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, the Biodiversity Museum by famous architect Frank Gehry, marinas, shops and restaurants.

Go Shopping: Panama City is a true shopper’s paradise and home to the striking Albrook Mall – the largest mall in Central America, one kilometre long and spread over two floors. Meanwhile, the upscale, grand-looking Multiplaza Mall is only five minutes’ drive from Grace Panama and hosts 280 shops, from luxury boutiques such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Cartier and many more to department stores and cinemas. Multicentro is located just 5 minutes away and features an array of boutiques within walking distance of the hotel.
